Top prizes for new Burnley and Pendle campuses

TWO East Lancashire school campuses have won national awards for excellence.

Burnley Campus and the Pendle Vale Campus, which were created in the first stages of Lancashire’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme beat off projects across the country to take home top prizes at the Excellence in BSF Awards.

Judges at the annual awards chose Pendle Vale College and Pendle Community High School and College, off Oxford Road, Nelson, for the Education for All award which celebrates inclu-siveness in learning and engaging with teachers, students and the local community, And Burnley Campus won the Community Hub award, which recognises joined-up facilities that place schools at the heart of their communities.

The awards were presented at an event in London held by Partnerships for School, PfS, and hosted by comedian Dara Ó Briain.

Dionne Holdsworth, Burnley Campus manager, said: “I am really proud of what has been achieved over the past 12 months by everyone involved in the campus.

“A great deal has been done in a comparatively short period of time to develop what is now such a truly fantastic facility and a real hub of the community. This award is shared by all the staff, students, our partners and the local community as we couldn't have done it without them.”

Paul Wright, headteacher of Pendle Community High School and College, a special school for pupils aged 11 to 19, and Steve Wilson, headteacher of Pendle Vale College, a mainstream school for children aged 11 to 16, said they were thrilled.

Mr Wright said: “This award is truly the icing on the cake at the end of a memorable week for the Pendle Vale Campus following on from the visit by the Duke of Kent.

“This achievement celebrates the work of all the young people and staff from both schools in bringing together a community which demonstrates the harm-ony possible when individuals respect each other irrespective of their background or disability.”

Mr Wilson added: “Although everyone is justly proud to have been given this prestigious award, this will not be the end of our work to develop a fully inclusive community and we look forward with excitement to the future.”
