Burnley business delivering booze, condoms and fags till 5am

A NEW business that delivers alcohol, cigarettes, snacks and even condoms to homes until 5am has been slammed for putting people’s health at risk.

Bosses behind Booze Direct said its early morning deliveries would “keep the party going” after pubs and clubs have shut.

But health officials, police and councillors have rounded on the operation, based in Colne Road, Burnley.

Coun Gordon Birtwistle, the leader of Burnley Council, said he was against such a business and hoped they did not succeed in the town.

“Anything that encourages excessive drinking or smoking is a concern for me. This is not the kind of sleazy operation we want,” he said.

“I think people can get all the alcohol they want from supermarkets and pubs without needing to get more in the early hours.

“Anything that encourages drunkeness doesn’t get my support, it is a step in the wrong direction and I hope they struggle.”

Zak Ahmed, the boss of Booze Direct, defended the company, which provides the service for orders of over £25.

He said it provided for a gap in the market when people either wanted to drink at home or wanted to continue drinking after they returned home from a nightout.

Mr Ahmed, who runs Bargain Booze in Colne Road, said: “I’ve had the idea for a few years and it is very successful so far. We have all sorts of customers, from people who are having parties or are just staying in, to those who want more to drink after the pub or nightclub. Our most popular items are beer and vodka.”

Other similar ventures already serve the Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas, but this is thought to be the first in East Lancashire.

Two Facebook groups that advertise the business and their services have so far got nearly 2,000 members.

Dr Tom Smith, the Lancashire Telegraph’s health expert, said young people’s obsession with booze was creating serious health problems and he was concerned the new service was encouraging people to drink more.

He said: “The change in alcohol consumption in the past few years has been colossal.

“We are seeing far more cases of liver and brain disease in young people and our surgery recently saw our first case of a woman in her 20s suffering from terminal liver failure.

“I can’t imagine anything more appaling than making it easier for people to drink more and for longer, it is an evil thing.

“The increase in alcohol consumption in the past two to three years is destroying families and killing young people and this is only going to make it worse.”

A public health spokesman for NHS East Lancashire said: “We are not telling people they should not have a drink but everyone needs to be aware of the negative consequences of excessive drinking.

“It can lead to serious health risks if people regularly drink over the recommended level of alcohol. The effect of alcohol harm on families and communities is substantial.

“As part of the SMYL campaign to Save a Million Years of Life by 2011, NHS East Lancashire is working hard with Burnley Council and our other partners to drive home key messages which encourage people to drink alcohol sensibly and safely.”

Coun Darren Reynolds said people needed to show alcohol more respect in order to enjoy themselves.

“I say to people, show yourselves a little respect,” he said. “I do worry about over-consumption of alcohol.

"You need to have respect for intoxicants like alcohol if you want to get the pleasure without the pain.

“Statistics show that Burnley fares badly for alcohol-related problems with health and crime.

“That said, if this new business can stay within the law, then that's fair enough.”

What a brilliant idea, for people who are too drunk to stagger out to find booze, this kind person will deliver the booze to your house.

What surprises me is that people whose religion strictly forbids alchohol, indeed to such an extant that when working as checkout or warehouse staff some refuse to handle it, that others can deliver/sell both day and night.

Izanears you are far too easily surprised. You will find that this person has no religious values whatsoever.

I see your point loud and clear, HOWEVER, firstly, it does not state anywhere in the article this particular numpty's religeous views, beliefs or ethnic background...
This moron 'Zak Ahmed' may be from whatever religion but it is his morality in question here! No decent faith or code of conduct would condone promoting the availability of products that are deleterious. All he cares about is the amount of money he can rake in in one night! Lets not get into the whole race hate thing here because i can assure you this lowlife would get a good beating from members of all colours and backgrounds.

What's the problem? If people can't handle their drink, they shouldn't drink. This is a perfectly reasonable service that could come in very useful to a lot of people (though I personally wouldn't buy anything from them as I bet their prices are extortionate).

Why is it wrong for a small business to provide a service that people want (alcohol delivered at late hours) yet it's perfectly fine for Asda, Tesco et all to sell it during the day?

Sometimes I wonder about the readership of this site. Oh, hang on, did I say sometimes? I meant constantly.

Perhaps this particular person may not be of the religious persuasion I suggested, but this does not to say that many of the offlicence owners, some who have been caught selling drink to youngsters are not. In Colne the owner of a town centre takeaway. who I believe is from the same ethnic group as Zak Ahmed is also applying for permission to sell alchohol up to five in the morning.

The only problem I see is that the Health Service is not making any profit from these late night activities.

Surely if the Health service was profiting from the damaging distribution of fags, drugs and booze in the first place it would lessen the burden on the taxpayer and everyone would be able to get high in the small hours and still be able to contribute something to the health economy at the same time as they were damaging their health.

Ambulance Drivers could drop the stuff off as they do very little in the small hours.

Booze Direct is only doing what any taxi driver can do.

its not the first in the area. I remember all night booze in darwen doing just the same about 5 years ago. Why not let people enjoy themselves. Bunch of moaning killjoys. Just because its not an idea the council have thought of and put a tax on.

The sort of minds that could ever contemplate starting up this sort of business can only be described as vermin feeding off others weaknesses!

I very much doubt they would bother checking for any I.D. when they are delivering the booze etc as long as they get their hands on the money, That's all that matters!

I also dispute the above comment about the health service not getting anything. Surely alcohol and cigarettes sold by this business have to be taxed just like alcohol and cigarettes from anywhere else?

It's not a bad idea. As mentioned above there's no difference in this and ringing a taxi to pick up some fags or booze.

The only concern, in my opinion, is that how do they prevent underage teens placing orders. As OneRover stated above, there used to be a similar service in Darwen, which me and my friends used aged 15/16.

Most of the people who are still drinking at 5a.m. are the layabouts who don't and won't work.
While it is us tax-payers who are paying for them to stay in bed all day and enable them to buy their booze out of our tax money.

I dont see what the problem is with booze direct they are providing a service that is proving to be popular in the Burnley area so filling a hole in the market, they are sensible people and i am sure they will be checking that any premises that they deliver to the customers are the correct age etc., they are just trying to earn a living so why knock people and try to give them a bad name.
