TWO teenage boys who were engulfed in flames when one of them accidentally threw a cigarette butt at a petrol can were last night recovering from their injuries.
The Little Lever High School pupils, aged 13 and 14, were out of school for lunch when the incident happened on Wednesday.
They managed to put the flames out before residents of Ferneyside, Little Lever, where the accident happened, ran to help.
Both were taken to hospital.
School staff, who were notified of the incident and rushed to assist are being kept updated on their conditions.
The boy who suffered burns to his face was allowed home on the day of the accident while the other teenager who sustained injuries to his leg was kept in for observation.
Headteacher Philip Hewitt said: “We are in constant touch with the parents of the two boys and have been since the incident happened.
“We were informed of the incident immediately and were with the boys as the emergency services arrived “The two had permission to be off the premises to go home for lunch. But our concern always is the welfare of pupils and we always reinforce to school children the importance of behaving responsibly so as not to cause harm to themselves or others.”
