Clitheroe town centre comes to a halt after accident

CLITHEROE town centre was brought to a standstill after a 4x4 was involved in a dramatic crash.

The female driver was said to have lost control when travelling up Moor Lane at around 8.15am, and took out several bollards and flower pots before coming to rest on a pavement near Clitheroe Travel facing back down Moor Lane.

The driver of the Suzuki Grand Vitara was taken to hospital as a precaution but later released.

The accident blocked the town’s one-way system for more than an hour as shoppers and workers struggled to get into town.

David Cowgill, of Cowgill’s newsagents and toyshop, said: “The town came to a complete standstill.

"Nobody could get in and it was really quiet for a good hour or so.

"I have no idea how the accident happened. It looks almost impossible to end up where the vehicle did.”

Isn't that why people buy 4x4s -so they can drive over anything and anybody?

Spot on happycyclist. Its usually the husband that buys 'the little lady' one of these gas guzzling aborations so that, if she has an accident, she wont come off worst.
The problem is that the actual vehicle is cumbersome and often too large to be easily managed.

Sorry, this may not be PC. It just happens to be true.

The monstrocities should be removed from the roads. There is absolutely no reason for their existence . If you want to drive in the country, get a tractor.

Mike Costa (above) talking out of his backside again.

It's not the cars, it's the drivers!

It's supposed to be a free Country so you drive a 4x4 if you want to. They pay the tax and the fuel costs not you.

A Suzuki Vitara is hardly a big 4x4, they're smaller than your average family car.

They pay the tax and the fuel, but we all pay for them poluting the atmosphere. Your argument about being a free country is nonesense, unless you are also in favour of such activities as drinking to excess and urinating in the streets
If you read what I said, I was inferring it was the drivers fault, primarily because they shouldnt be driving a 4x4.

So a Suzuki Vitara isnt a big 4x4? I'll bow to your superior knowledge.

Mike Costa, if my husband had an attitude as outdated and sexist as yours, I'd have run him over by now.

Sorry, this may not be PC either but it's truer than your statement.

Touched a raw nerve have I? So sorry, but next time you are out and about, watch some women struggling manfully to control their 4x4.

Then tell me I'm wrong. As for husbands buying their wives 4x4s for the reason I mentioned above, I know of several who have said just that.

Notice how I refrained from saying that if you tried to run me down, 'I bet you'd miss'?

If this is a discussion about 4x4 ownership, I've no problem with anyone owning one as long as they can actually drive and control it properly.

The driving and controlling of them isn't a gender issue. I've seen bad women drivers and bad men drivers.

However, we're all human and all capable of making the odd mistake. As long as you aren't drunk, drugged up or a banned driver and you don't kill anyone, it's hardly the end of the world.

The point is to buy and drive a car you can control and feel comfortable in.

Mike Costa, I don't know if I'd have missed you because I don't know how big you are :)

People are just driving too fast nowadays. Saturday night a 4x4 took out West Bradford bridge and caused some major damage - I suspect they were driving too fast and skidded on the wet road. We all just need to slow down a little, irrespective of what car you drive.

Mike Costa sys:

Touche !

And actually, I agree with everything you say. Its not really a gender issue is it? Its an ability issue. And there are some truly shocking male and female drivers about.

If you do ever see me, I hope you would swerve to avoid me!

~I have to agree with mike costa on there is no point to these vehicles being on the road unless they are for use on farms. remember the wintry conditions? didnt see one 4x4 on the road thought they would of been perfect for that weather

well at least it's been off road now, which is a lot more than most of them have.
agree about driving too fast it's getting ridiculous and dangerous now.

Maybe you should all go on the advertiser webiste and look at the pictures of the amount of damage done to the car. This lady was lucky to get out of her car unhurt, www.clitheroetoday.c

4x4's want pricing off the road. The amount of people who also cannot drive them is frightening.

I also wondered who had demolished half the wall of West Bradford bridge.

Now I know....a 4x4...what a coincidence!

only way to stop dangerous driving is to use the money generated from the idiotic speed camaras and put more traffic police on the road. I think traffic police are as rare as red squirrels nowadays

They would have a field day on Pimlico and Chatburn Road...it won't be too long before a child is run over...some nights its like a race track!

The Clitheroe Advertiser web site describes it as a bizarre accident, Living in the town for over 50 years I can say it is not bizarre as i have seen many crashes at the same spot usually the car ends up in a shop window slighly higher up.

What a great idea. Only let farmers buy 4x4's. If only farmers buy them, think of how much more expensive they'd be for them! Think of how much more expensive your milk will become.

Next time your stuck up a mountain somewhere with a broken leg, lets just hope that a farmer is free to rescue you. Or lets just hope that a volunteer from the mountain rescue who uses a 4x4 as a daily driver can come and rescue you!

So when all the 4x4s have been banned, lets ban buses and wagons too, because beleive it or not they can crash too. Then lets ban sports cars because they're too fast. Then luxury cars because they're too big. There seems to be too many people who think that if everyone drives Toyota Pruis' then that natural phenomenon called global warming will be reversed!

I drive a 4x4. Yes, it spends 90% of the time on the road. It does go off road too. I'm not going to get shut of it because I'm tarred with the same brush as someone who can't drive one properly crashes one.
