Tesco Express plan for former Burnley pub

A FORMER pub will be transformed into a Tesco store.

The supermarket giant has confirmed that the old Brunshaw inn, in Brunshaw Road, Burnley, will open as one of its Express shops by the end of the year.

Tesco said the opening is an “excellent opportunity” for people living in the area and the store will create up to 30 new jobs.

However, the announcement has confirmed the fears of many residents and a newsagent whose shop is just yards away.

Afzal Malik, from Brunshaw News, said: “I have lots of customers and I deliver newspapers to about 400 people at the moment but if Tesco move in it will really affect me.

“However, a lot of my customers have backed me all the way and have said they will boycott it when it opens.”

Mr Malik, 53, said he now intends to apply for planning permission for a £50,000 extension to his newsagents so he can “take the fight” to Tesco.

He added: “This is the only choice I have got and if anyone else was in my position they would do the same.

“I have got three kids and I don’t want to let them down. I cannot afford to go out of business.”

Earlier this year, residents from the Brunshaw Road area told Burnley Council’s planning committee they feared Tesco was planning to move into the disused Brunshaw pub - although this was not confirmed at the time.

However, it did not stop councillors granting Manchester-based planning consultancy GL Hearn permission for a full shop refit and the installation of an ATM.

Today, Tesco said it had only recently been offered the site by an agent.

A spokeswoman added: “We can confirm that we have agreed to lease a new retail unit to open a Tesco Express store.

“The unit is to be formed through the redevelopment of the former Brunshaw Pub in Burnley.

“We hope to open the Express by the end of 2009, creating 20 to 30 new jobs for local people.”

holsten pils,
Sometimes your remarks can be funny but in cases like this I don't think they are needed.
This is another big store not being content to compete with other major supermarkets but are now attacking the smaller retailer.
Gradually people will forget signing the petition when Tesco move in. The newsagent's shop has been the hub of Brunshaw life for many, many years then they allowed the Spar shop which must have hit trade and now this.

Mr Malik you have no chance. tesco can afford to give their products away for free in this local shop to kill off all the competition, and after that they will double their prices

Welcome to TESCO land.
Somewhat ironically, the security word for this post is soon-they
Soon they (Tesco) will have taken the country over.

I am one of the residents who lodged a complaint with Burnley Council when we were first imformed that it was to be a "convenience store" but were not imformed until recently that it was to be Tesco's. All complaints and objections fell on deaf ears and Council gave the go ahead earlier this year. It is to late now as workman have been in all week ripping out all fixtures and fittings ready for the conversion. But no one will say what is happening with the car park/spare land behind the pub.A lot of residents are concerned about this, myself included as I am one of the closest residents to the pub.We are hoping that someone will eventually imform us exactly what is happening.

This is typical tesco tactics in opening stores,

they get someone else to put in the planning application knowing that it would be turned down if it was a tesco.

Once the planning application is passed for another "store" they mearly buy the store from an "agent" who they already had in place to set up the deal. They also own or fund the original application using a proxy company.

If you dont belive my words google "tesco planning application tactics" and you will see.

Quite correct. Also Tesco know that if planning permission is refused they can bully the local authority with threats of prolonged appeals and ever mounting costs.
Local authorities with limited budgets usually knuckle under.
