SUPPER will be as cheap as chips when a new restaurant opens its doors this week.
Owners Mark and Lesley White plan to offer a portion of fish and chips at 50-year-old prices — 1s 11d or just 10p in today’s money — to the first 20 customers to celebrate the opening of their new chip shop in Bath Street, off St George’s Road.
The couple, who already run the nearby Superior Sandwich Company, wanted to make the price as traditional as the food when they bought the former Chinese chippy.
So they stepped back in time, with a financial nod to the 1950s, when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and Britain got its first sight of a Frisbee.
They are, however, borrowing one retail trend from 2009.
Mr White said: “We’re introducing a loyalty card so customers can earn a free portion of fish and chips after so many visits. And we’re also giving out discount vouchers for some return visits.”
The 10p offer comes hot on the heels of Marks & Spencer’s 1p sale last month, which marked the retailer’s 125th anniversary, taking shoppers back to Marks and Spencer’s beginnings as a penny bazaar.
Bath Brow traditional fish and chip shop opens at 6.30pm this Friday.

A pen'oth o' chips and a tuppeny fish were a good meal.
A whole plaice cost thripence and there was always a large pan of butter beans and one of mushy peas simmering on the stove. You could get a little greaseproof bagful of either for an extra penny.
The only fish he cooked (other than plaice) was Silver Hake and everyting was cooked in "Kilverts Pure Lard"
And that wasn't only for the first twenty customers!
