TRAIN station yobs have been warned “there’s nowhere to hide” after a security clampdown on railway crime got under way in Bolton.

As part of a £600,000 programme, transport bosses have improved Bromley Cross, Daisy Hill, Farnworth and Lostock stations, installing CCTV cameras to monitor platforms and tracks.

And the cash means passengers can now check if services are on time thanks to new train information screens and public-address systems on the platforms.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We hope offenders will now think twice before committing crimes at stations.

“CCTV is an excellent detection tool and is a great deterrent for would-be offenders, who are aware their actions are being recorded.”

The cash injection comes just a week after The Bolton News revealed details of a £4 million makeover of Bolton Train Station. They include proposals to refurbish waiting rooms, the ticket office and platforms.

The latest investment comes after Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) bosses held talks with unhappy passengers at Bolton Train Station.

Representatives say the latest improvement is a direct response to commuters’ concerns.

GMITA Bolton spokesman, Cllr Norman Critchley, said: “These are exactly the kind of facilities passengers want to see provided at stations so I’m delighted we’ve been able to provide them.

“Public transport is a safe way to travel but providing things like CCTV and public-address systems provides another reassurance for passengers.”
