A BABY boy has been taken into care after doctors found he had “unexplained injuries”.

A 38-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault after police and council officers swooped on an address in Darwen.

As part of the probe, a number of other houses have also been visited by social workers and the police.

The three-month-old, who had injuries to both arms when he was taken to hospital, has been placed with foster carers.

Peter Morgan, Blackburn with Darwen council’s strategic director of children’s services, said a thorough investigation had been launched into the case.

He said: “We acted immediately to protect the safety and well being of the child by placing him with foster carers while an investigation into the cause of his injuries is ongoing.

“It is routine in any child protection case for us to speak to all relatives who might have had contact with the child. Part of that process might also involve assessing other family members for suitability as potential carers of that child.

“As a result, social workers and police have visited a number of homes as part of this inquiry and our investigations are continuing.”

Police confirmed the woman had been bailed pending further inquiries.

Meanwhile, a ward councillor urged caution following the arrest.

Lib Dem Roy Davies, represents Sudell, where the child is understood to have been living.

He said: “I am concerned about people pointing fingers in the area when this gets out on the street.

“Until we know the full facts the last thing we want is people whispering and using their imagination”.

Labour’s children’s spokeswoman Coun Maureen Bateson refused to comment on the investigation, which was launched after the woman’s arrest on Monday.

She added: “In all these cases, it is the council’s duty to act in the best interests of the child.”
