A TOP firefighter is laden down with medals after his stunning performances at an international sporting event.

Tony Holt, of Bury New Road, Whitefield, usually runs for Radcliffe Athletics Club in over 40s 'veterans' events, but took a week off regular training to compete against fellow rescuers at the World Firefighters Games held in Liverpool.

Tony, who is based at Stretford Fire Station, gained two golds - in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays - a silver in both the 800m and triple jump, and a bronze in the 1500m.

The all-rounder gained more medals than any other athlete from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and his station was the most successful in the county.

Tony, who also won a gold and silver at the last event in Sheffield four years ago, said: "I trained very hard for the games and am very proud to have achieved this.

"I enjoyed every minute of it - there was so much camaraderie with firefighers from everywhere in the world. I'm delighted with my station's achievement."

The games brought together around 5,000 athletes from more than 50 countries competing in more than 70 different sports. He is training for a 15-mile fell event so he can compete for Radcliffe in a fell race grand prix.
