People across Lancashire will go to the polls in May for the upcoming 2024 local elections following a tumultuous few months which have shaken up a number of councils.

Voters in eight of the county’s boroughs will be going to the polls, while the role of Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner is also up for election.

There are a few notable names who will be seeking re-election to their respective councils, while changing party allegiances, many due to UK political stances on the Israel/Hamas conflict, have also added to the choice for the electorate.

In Blackburn with Darwen, the likes of children’s services boss Julie Gunn and leading Conservative Mark Russell are up for re-election, as is former Tory Altaf ‘Tiger’ Patel, who quit the party over its stance on the conflict in Gaza.

The 4 BWD group of ex-Labour councillors who also quit over their party’s handling of the war in Gaza will also be hoping to make gains.

In Burnley, the 11-strong Burnley Independent Group of ex-Labour councillors is currently in power,  but with three of their number up for election and another not running, control of the borough hands in the balance.

Hyndburn sees heavyweights such as deputy leader Peter Britcliffe, Noordad Aziz and Munsif Dad vying to keep their seats, while control of the council remains on a knife edge.

Pendle saw all 20 Labour councillors quit the party earlier this month, and with five up for election will be hoping to claw back some standing in the borough.

Meanwhile, Rossendale sees more than 80 candidates in the running, with an all-out election being held after the number of wards and councillors was cut after boundary reviews.

With a general election almost certainly to be held later this year, the local elections will also be a good litmus test for public opinion.

The main political parties are all fielding plenty of candidates across the county, while a number of smaller groups and independent candidates are also in the running.

Campaigning is already well underway as parties and candidates lobby the public to try and win their votes ahead of election day.

These are all the candidates standing in every council ward across Lancashire in this year's local elections:
