GREEN campaigners are to hold a protest outside Bolton MP Ruth Kelly's constituency office tomorrow.

The protesters are taking part in a national day of demonstration against the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation.

The European Union directive will require fuel companies to include biofuels in their products. From tomorrow, 2.5 per cent of petrol and diesel sold in the UK will include fuel from crops such as palm oil and maize. The EU hopes it will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. However, activists claim the reverse will happen.

Green party member James Alden said: "There is a proven direct link between biofuels and climate change, deforestation and the degradation of local communities. The directive will only fuel these problems as there is no safeguard ensuring that the biofuels come from a sustainable source."

The protesters are calling on Ms Kelly to lobby against the directive.

My sympathies are with Ruth Kelly on this one. These so-called green people are never satisfied and constantly want to interfere. How are they all going to get into the town-centre, by walking? The best thing that the so-called green people can do is to support Ruth Kelly in backing the family. The splitting up of the family and the need for all those extra houses causes far more harm to the environment than anything else.

I have some sympathies with their plight. The price of wheat is soaring as it is, without introducing new biofuels.

Many people will have to starve if the Government really want to cut emissions and preserve oil supplies, and that's just not ethical.

Ruth Kelly could do with urging for an improvement in public transport, thus encouraging people to leave their cars at home, rather than these trendy new initiatives.

Do the school run in an SUV, fly to spain for a tenner, buy a new mobile because Joe Neighbor has one, more new shoes for the missus, hundred quid trainers for little Johnny.

The greens are right but nothing will be done until it's too late.

The real "green" issue is the one that dare not speak its name: overpopulation. There are no government policies to tackle it yet each extra human being is emitting and consuming all the time, whereas vehicles only emit while they are moving which is infrequently for most vehicles.

Spot on but people think it's their right to have as many kids as they want.

It smacks a bit of Communism - are we going to employ a one-child policy, like China?!

Maybe instead of funding research into biofuels, it might be a better idea to look into methods using hydrogen power.
