BUS cuts and service withdrawals have hit a nerve with public transport campaigners.

News regarding changes to bus services across Bolton could mean residents will have to make permanent alterations to their day.

From March 30, a number of amendments will be introduced by FirstGroup to some of the busiest routes between Bolton and Manchester.

The number 8 service, which used to operate between the town and the city every eight minutes, will now revert to every 10 minutes.

The number 36 service, also a popular route between Bolton and Manchester via Little Hulton and Walkden, will be re-timed to operate five minutes earlier on two morning journeys. Service 534 has been withdrawn.

Preva Crossley, from Great Lever, a member of Greater Manchester Transport Campaign, says this commercial decision can only be to save money.

He said: "I object to any buses being cut. I'm very disappointed that the number 8 service has been cut when it is the busiest, and quickest route between Bolton and Manchester.

"My argument is, with the increasing number of people using the bus service, why cut them? It is obviously a commercial decision for the only reason I can see, to save money."

Other services affected by the changes are services 516, 553 and 559 which will now be provided by an alternative operator. Service 540 meanwhile has been improved.

Simon Bennett, network director for FirstGroup, said: "This time of the year is one of the five opportunities when, by agreement with our partners, we can introduce changes to enhance our network in order to deliver added reliability for customers."

Mr Crossley, who has no local link during the evening due to his usual 570 service terminating from 7pm onwards, said: "I would like to see more and more services introduced on a fair proportion. What we need is a guaranteed reliable service. Bus operators should put more thought into drawing up their timetables to allow more leeway for traffic, and possible delays."

Cuts from March 30th, new national bus passes come in on April 1st, meaning bus use will go up, what a dumb decision.

RagReader - Free fares come in - and poassenger numbers go up - but the bus companies get less money for them. Its no good having full buses if they are not getting enough money out of them.
Free fares for pensioners is resulting in lots of cutbacks all across the country. Well done Gordon Brown

With the trains full to bursting every weekday, First should be looking at providing express services between Bolton, Farnworth and Manchester. They could take hundreds of passengers from Northern Rail.

I wonder if the 559 is going to go back to being a frequent service if another operator is taking the route over. Hope it's better too.

as a driver we see all the buses full with oldies and the takings are down that why cutbacks are needed to many traveling short distance as for no 8 to many to close means more empty buses

Route 8 being reduced to every 10 minutes and will still be serviced by the Bendi (Articulate) buses until the streetcar buses arrive (promised for 2008 but now delayed until 2010 due to the ones reuired being diverted to other First bus companies around the country)! Double will NOT be used on Route 8.

Routes 551 and 559 are only having a change of operator - everything else is staying the same. These routes will now be operated by Tyrer's (they already operate 544 in Bolton) instead of First (no route or timetable change) on behalf of the PTE.

Bolton are getting NO new double decker buses from First and instead they are going to the Manchester, Oldham and Wigan garages ONLY - the only chance of Bolton seeing a new double decker will be on route 540!!!

Route 534, by First bus , is being withdrawn due to heavy competition from Arriva in Astley Bridge. Arriva's 534 will NOT be affected.

All other changes are just minor timetable changes.

In light of the other bus story on this site i would stop all buses that go to Breightment until the people there learn how to behave in a civilixesd manner and ensure that their offspring do.

That would then allow the other services to carry on as normal

KeithT - if you are talking about the 510 story - then you should ought to find out the exact route before commenting.

510 does NOT touch Breightnet - it goes through the Withins estate via Winchester Way and Thicketford Road.

It is also funny that trouble also appears on Route 561/562 through the Withins Estate and NOT when travelling through Breightmet!

Otherwise there would be vandalsim to bus routes 95 and 471 but there isn't and they do go through Breightmet.

Can the BN please advise as to when Withins Estate became part of Breightmet?
