VIOLENT patients who attack paramedics will face the full force of the law.

North-west Ambulance Service has signed an agreement with police and prosecutors to ensure anyone who is violent or aggressive towards NHS staff is prosecuted.

Ambulance service area director Delwyn Wray said: "We are thrilled we finally have a protocol in place to prove to staff we will not tolerate them suffering at the hands of mindless individuals while they are trying to carry out their jobs.

"Our paramedics and technicians save lives on a daily basis and it is saddening they are being subjected to violence and abuse."

Attacks on ambulance staff in Greater Manchester have soared by more than 13 per cent in 12 months.

In the year to April, 2007, there were 412 incidents, compared to 364 in the previous 12 months.

The protocol was launched at the service's headquarters in Ladybridge Hall in Chorley New Road, Heaton.

It is hoped the partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service and Greater Manchester Police will help to fast-track cases of violence against paramedics.

Ambulance bosses have pledged to report incidents as early as possible and to help police with their investigations.

Chief Crown prosecutor John Holt said: "We are keen to clamp down on the number of assaults NHS staff are faced with. It is totally unacceptable.

"This protocol allows us to act in partnership to ensure, where appropriate, that individuals responsible for such acts of violence or aggression will face appropriate sanctions."

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Taylor said: "GMP will take robust action against anyone who believes it is acceptable to attack NHS staff.

"This behaviour should not, and will not, be tolerated."

It is not the first effort to cut the number of attacks against NHS staff in Bolton.

Between November, 2006, and February last year, a pilot scheme saw police drafted in at Royal Bolton Hospital.

It resulted in seven people being referred to police and two £80 on-the-spot fines being issued by officers.

As usual, there's no deterrent and the scumbags know it.
Bring in some 'real' punishment that the scum will fear and you might get somewhere.

What does 'face the full force of the law' mean....

These type of people don't care if they attack staff and will do the time, fines are a waste of time and most of these type of people dont have jobs or money and some will even rob to pay fines.

Only real solution is not treat them, kick them out of hospial and let them suffer.

They will be made to sign an ASBO which will require them to behave or have to sign another ASBO.

I think the government are working on the assumption that illiterate people live in terror of being asked to sign worthless bits of paper.

Incidentally, at least 50% of fines are never paid. Anything to do with the fact that the fines are dished-out to criminals for payment later? This is what being really tough on crime is all about.

Gang of girls fighting. Police officer asked them to stop, gave a warning then sprayed one of them with CS spray. PC brigade accused officer of using excess force. The police 'force'? What a joke.

Incidentally, the 50% that dont pay their fines go to prison for not paying them.

What do you mean by 'fines are dished-out to criminals for payment later?' Never heard of that in my life? Is it anything like the offers DFS do?

You've been "done" by the public sector double speak brigade! An on the spot fine means that plod issue a ticket and the offender can choose to pay by post OR take the matter to court. So: toe-rag gives false name and address and conveniently has no means of identification. Jobsworth plod issues a ticket with no means of checking accuracy. Result: fine unpaid.

You may be thinking of places like France where on the spot fines are paid there and then.

Plod's fines are much much better than those you get from DFS.

sharia law is the way forward - a good dose of sanctioned brutality against bad'uns and you'll have the scum on the run in a jiffy.

What has been already said i agree with. Anybody who attacks hospital staff or paramedics should not be treated EVER! A good way of getting rid of the scum in our society me thinks.
