WYTHENSHAWE Hospital's groundbreaking Breast Services Centre has recently purchased a new bone density scanner.
The £85,000.scanner will help to highlight potential damage to bone density caused by cancer drugs, administered as part of treatment for breast cancer.
Wythenshawe Hospital's superintendent of radiography, Barbara Eckersley, said: "Some cancer drugs, while having untold benefits in terms of treatment, may have detrimental effects on bone quality.
"By determining if a patient is suffering bone density changes, we can put in place dietary modifications and supplements to counter the negative effects on bone quality."
The hospital plans to develop the service for other patients, including orthopaedic and rheumatology patients.
It will also be developed to allow GPs to refer patients for scanning who could be at risk from bone fractures.
