DOOR supervisors at a Nelson club have defended its reputation after it was threatened with closure by police.

Licensing officers in Pendle have called for a review of the Good Night club, in Stanley Street, amid claims that it has become a magnet for troublemakers.

Police have also issued a closure notice against the club and licensees Dave Geddes, accusing manage-ment of failing to maintain CCTV systems and hiring unlicensed door supervisors, despite repeated warnings.

But John Bartle, who works on the Good Night's doors with three colleagues, hit back and said both himself and fellow door supervisors were all accredited with the Security Industry Association, their trade watchdog.

Mr Bartley added: "We have been working there since Dave Geddes took over in November and we are all badged up."

Mr Bartley, who works alongside Alex Moody, Pete Griffiths and Chris Stansfield on the doors, feels that the Good Night, and Mr Geddes, is being unfairly treated by the police and licensing authorities.

"We are just trying to do a job here. A lot of issues have been going on outside the club and not inside," said Mr Bartley.

"People are claiming it is our problem and often they have not even been inside. It is just getting to us because we are getting all the grief about this."

Mr Bartley now plans to write to Pendle Council's licensing committee, which will decide on the Good Night review, to express his views.

Councillors on the licen-sing committee have several options when considering the review - ranging from taking no action to either suspending or removing the premises licence.

Police say that, under the terms of the closure notice, the club has so far complied with conditions regarding door supervisors.

Licensing officers will continue to visit the club for the next six months.

If any further breaches occur then they can apply to magistrates to close the club.

Mr Geddes has defended the club's record and claimed the problems happened when pubs closed and drinkers descended on the Stanley Street venue.

Three men from Nelson are awaiting sentence at Burnley Crown Court after a major disturbance outside the club in January.
