NURSES based in Burnley are being paid to sit on a bus and travel to and from Blackburn to cover a winter staffing problem.

Staff who normally work at Burnley General Hospital are "wasting" around an hour a day completing the round trip.

Hospital bosses are allowing nurses to travel during their working day to show their "appreciation" of their efforts, and because otherwise the journey would add "considerable time on to their shift."

Nursing unions said the deal would alleviate childcare problems caused by moving staff from their normal workplace.

But patient groups have hit out at the move, calling it inefficient and wasteful.

Increases in medical emergencies and winter illnesses at both the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital have meant that planned surgery at Burnley has been reduced, and 14 acute medical beds, along with the staff to cover them, have been transferred to Blackburn.

Staff can either make their own way to Blackburn, or use the free shuttle bus, which takes patients, visitors and staff between the two hospitals every 20 minutes.

And hospital bosses said moving staff between the hospitals in this way was not unusual, happening even before the controversial changes under the controversial Meeting Patients' Needs clinical services review, which removed A & E services from Burnley.

John Amos, chairman of the East Lancashire Hospitals public and patient involvement forum, said: "They are saying it is one trust and staff are expected to work at different sites, then paying people to travel.

"I'd be pretty peeved if I was one of the nurses who has been transferred over to Blackburn permanently and has to make their own way there.

"The staff are being paid to sit on a bus and the patients are being deprived of that time and money."

Vice chairman Helen Hedges added: "It seems a very inefficient and wasteful use of professionals' time and resources."

But Caroline Collins, East Lancashire's regional officer for the Royal College of Nursing, said the move was likely to have been designed to ensure no "unreasonable" requests were made of nurses.

She said: "It might not be possible for someone with childcare commitments to add an hour on to their shift, which would make the request to work at Blackburn unreasonable in terms of employment guidelines."

Val Bertenshaw, director of operations at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "Staff have been very supportive in making this temporary ward work well and to show our appreciation of this effort they can use the shuttle bus or own transport to make the journey to Blackburn during their shift - not in their own personal time, which would add considerable time on to their shift.

"As an organisation which covers four local hospitals, there is a requirement for staff to be flexible to ensure that patient need is met.

"As an employer we work very hard to plan our activity to ensure all areas of the hospital are staffed appropriately."

Kitty Ussher and the rest of your New Labour cronies prepare to be dumped at the next election. You have treated the voters of East Lancashire with contempt and we are going to treat you just the same.

Sounds about right this, paid to sit on the bus. Lancashire Evening Telegraph you need to put up a comment box for all patients who have had shoddy treatment at the trusts expense...

its not only the nurses suffering with having to travel, my mother was transferred to burnley to a "rehab dept" which was only a move from one ward to another, she could have stayed here and a burnley patient put on the ward at burnley, but that takes a bit of thought and as she is not a "big bugs" parent everyone spent an extra hour a day on visiting, also these older people have older friends who often have to rely on public transport so that would be two buses up to the royal, then the shuttle to burnley then two buses home, how long do people like j cubbins and her cronies think this would cost and how long will it have taken, subsequently all my mum had in four weeks were relatives as she is nearly 80 and so are all her friends.

So let me get this right if your labour conservative are whatever else this situation will change? oh yeah i see conservatives will win next general election and burnley general(which in my opinion was much needed as an A & E) will automatically re-open? you living on mars the conservatives want all medical care private enjoy your voting. i'll be sitting here hoping no-one especially your families need emergency care who can't afford insurance. these nurses had a good job and had a good hospital with A&E facilities and you all kept you butts firmly on your seats until now when you could of all stood up as one and said hold on noooooooo we need this facility. don't complain after the things have changed it's too late. complain as it is happening. and i'm sure if in your job you still was required to visit multiple sites you would be paid like i am that wouldn't be a problem so why shouldn't these life saving nurses.

Unfortunately, whoever gets in at the next election, will not re-open Burnley A&E. It should never have been shut in the first place, and i for one am graterul that when i lived in colne and my daughter required urgent medical attention that Burnley was open. She died twice in the ambulance and they resuscitated her and there is no way on earth that she would have made it to Blackburn! The staff were absolutely marvellous at Burnley and if there is a shuttle bus to and from work at Blackburn, why should they suffer when they never asked for the move? Try backing the staff, try using your vote in future, try picket lines for essentials like A&E in a major town like Burnley! I personally don't care about the politics of how much it was costing, What concerns me is that adequate healthcare is available to all people! What price do you put on a life?? Surely some money could have been saved, surely no town needs so many councillors with expenses more than 6 times peoples annual incomes! Next time your council come up with a brainwave, think with your feet and vote!!

Why should we not travel to Blackburn in works time ....if i arrive at work on time to start my shift and my manager asks me if i could go over to Blackburn for the day as they are short staffed or if i am asked to work part of my shift in Burnley then part of my shift in Blackburn do you realy expect me to turn around and say to my manager yes of corse i will but please do not pay me untill i get to Blackburn .........i think not .... and as i am doing them a favour this is the only benefit i get to travel in works time now and again when asked to do so......
And can i point out that the mini busses that used to run ceased service on the 21st of december 2006 so the photo needs to be updated !

So, the nurses are getting paid to sit on their backsides? Nowt new there then! Bone idle most of them, in my experience, both as a patient and from working within the NHS.

I assume J Cross of Burnley is a nurse. My hope is that she makes a lot less spelling errors when making notes on patients than she does in stating her case on this subject.I should hate for her to be my nurse and I end up not with penicillin but pencil-in.

Why should'nt they travel in their employers time, the staff have not asked to be moved to blackburn royal.
And to be honest why should people get to travel free to blackburn royal from burnley for clinics ? they should get their under their own steam .

These nurses are traveling in uniform too, I thought they had to change into their uniform only when on hospital premises, this isn't the case I see Hospital staff walking round Burnley town centre in their GREENS, and nurses round ASDA in uniform, as long as this is allowed to happen these so called super bugs, and cross infection will escalate, I know I've gone of the topic here but they can do as much super cleaning as they like in the hospitals, the staff need to be stopped wearing uniforms outside the hospitals as a major start to the cleansing program

Lucky nurses getting paid for travelling between hospitals, most other staff who have to travel to Blackburn from Burnley to work have to catch the bus in their own time. Also on the point of how many deaths happen in the ambulance ‘on route’ to Blackburn 'who knows' as the managers have told ambulance staff they are unable to certify death this means hospital staff are having to certify, therefore the death is classed as a hospital death rather than on route. Because of this, there are no official figures on deaths ‘on route’ so if the government ask if the merger is working, the answer is of course because there are no figures to contradict this

Perhaps when the next Chief Executive is appointed they will pick somebody local who has an interest in the local community. Appointing somebody from outside the area is ludicrous, they have no interest in local views.

And now the the current Chief Executive, who is leaving in a few weeks, only works 3 days a week for East Lancashire, the other 2 days she is working at her new trust in Cornwall. So we can see where her loyalties lie.
