A MUSLIM councillor has slammed the jailing of teacher Gillian Gibbons in Sudan as outrageous.
Mrs Gibbons has been sentenced to 15 days imprisonment after she allowed children in her class to name a teddy bear Mohammed.
She was reported to the police by a fellow teacher and was charged with inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs on Thursday.
Coun Salim Mulla, who is the senior vice chairman of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said: "It is very difficult for me to understand the punishment. It is a petty thing and she meant no harm whatsoever. It should have been resolved amicably in the school system.
"I am glad that the Foreign Office is putting pressure on Sudan's government for her early release. A lot of people in the Muslim community do not agree with what has happened at all."
