A PRISON officer has been convicted of sexually assaulting a female colleague at a north west jail.

Trevor Wright had been found guilty on a jury's majority verdict of sexual assault.

However, he was found not guilty on a second charge relating to the same woman.

Following a recent Preston Crown Court trial, the jury was unable to reach verdicts on seven other charges.

It had been alleged Wright, 47, of Heron Close, Blackburn molested three female workers at the prison.

It was not possible to report the one guilty verdict at the time, as he had faced the possibility of a retrial on the charges where the jury could not reach verdicts.

But at a mention hearing yesterday, Miss Elizabeth Nicholls told the court: "The crown has decided for pragmatic reasons they don't think it would be in the public interest to have a retrial on the remaining counts."

The defendant claimed the accusations had been "fabricated".

Judge Pamela Badley adjourned the case to January 8 for a pre-sentence report.
