SWIMMING 92-year-old supergran Ada Gibson has been named as Hyndburn's fittest over 50 at a community awards ceremony.

Ada scooped the inaugural Ambassador Awards prize after regularly rolling back the years and raising charity cash in a swim-a-mile challenge.

The great grandmother, of Grange Street, Clayton-le-Moors, has taken on the challenge for the past 17 years in a row at Mercer Hall Leisure Centre, Great Harwood.

Ada, who also volunteers for Age Concern, was presented with her award at a ceremony organised by Hyndburn Community Network.

Ada said: "I'm as fit as a fiddle and I love swimming.

"As long as I can keep up my good health, I will keep going. I don't feel 92!"

Eight other volunteers were recognised for their skills, dedication and commitment to Hyndburn during the ceremony at Accrington Town Hall.

Margaret Laffy was rewarded for her long service to Age Concern; Barbara Ibbetson, of Milnshaw Residents' Association, won the Community Spirited Award; and Pat Sullivan, of the Hyndburn branch of the Local Family History and Heraldry Society, won the Most Enterprising Award.

The Greenest Award went to Brian Beston, of Woodnook Residents' Association, and the Thrifty 50 Award was won by Colin Cooper, of Rishton Prospects Panel.

The Young at Heart Award was given to John Drinkwater for Neighbourhood Renewal Community Voice.

And the Against All Odds Award was given to both Gwen Pickup, of Willow Close Community Centre Craft Group, and Doreen Hornby, of the Red Rose Singers.
