A BOY cannot remember the fatal road accident which killed his father, according to his family.

Aiden Halstead, eight, is sitting up in his hospital bed and chatting to visitors, but his family fear he will be brain damaged.

But his aunt, Anne Patten, said he had no recollection of the head-on collision which left his father, Peter, dead.

Mr Halstead, 47, was returning home with his family to Western Australia after holidaying through the Northern Territory when the crash happened earlier this month.

The father-of-two died at the scene. His wife Julie, 44, and children Harrison, 11, also survived the crash.

Aiden suffered a severe head injury, internal injuries and several broken bones.

The family emigrated to Australia from Burnley more than 12 years ago.

Ms Patten said: "We fear Aiden will be brain damaged."

Aiden, who was trapped upside down in the wreckage of his family car and was freed by emergency workers, has cried out in his sleep: "Let me out!"

Ms Patten said Aiden kept asking for his Dad.

She said: "He says his dad has been to visit him in hospital.

"A nurse even saw a blind move."

Ms Patten said Aiden was easily tired. "He stays awake for 20 minutes and then drops off."

Aiden has been transferred from Royal Darwin Hospital to St Margaret's in Perth.

He is expected to remain in hospital for a further three months.
