A SUSPECT from Manchester has appeared in court in connection with a £60,000 raid on a Tesco Express store in Burnley.

David Bennett, 29, of Waterton Avenue, Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne, appeared before Burnley magistrates in custody yesterday.

Bennett is accused of burglary with intent to steal in relation to the Tesco Express store on Casterton Avenue, Burnley, on October 24.

No plea was taken on the charge, which is said to have taken place between 3am and 4am. In total £60,000 was taken during the raid.

Magistrates declined to deal with the case and ordered that it should be heard before a judge at Burnley Crown Court.

Bennett was remanded in custody until December 21 for committal proceedings. No application for bail was made.

He is next due before the court next Tuesday, for an interim hearing, but his attendance was excused by magistrates at his own request.

Police have confirmed that investigations are still continuing into the Tesco burglary, near to the Burnley General Hospital site, where a cash machine was targeted by thieves.
