A banned driver who told police his name was Peter was caught out after his friends said: "Mick, we're off", a court was told.

Burnley magistrates heard how Michael Ganley, 40, was promptly arrested - and has now clocked up 14 convictions for getting behind the wheel whilst disqualified.

Ganley, of Pheasantford Street, Burnley, admitted driving whilst banned on September 21, but was not prosecuted for police obstruction.

The defendant was given 120 days in jail, suspended for a year, with 12 months supervision.

He was banned for three years but the bench made no order for costs.

Sophie Lorimer, prosecuting, said police stopped Ganley when he pulled out in front of them in a van.

He told them he was called Peter Cunningham and lived on Devonshire Road, Burnley. After his friends left and he was arrested, he gave his correct details.

Mark Williams, defending, said Ganley and his long-term partner separated and he had gone to collect some furniture from a house that was going to be shut down.

He had spent a number of nights in custody.
