A CALL for violent patients to be blacklisted by the NHS was made today after it was revealed that there were more than 40 attacks on staff at the Royal Bolton Hospital last year.

The latest figures show that violent patients and their families attacked 42 hospital workers between March, 2006, and April, 2007.

In the same 12 months, the number of attacks on NHS staff working in the community - such as district nurses - soared to 118.

Cllr Andy Morgan, chairman of the health scrutiny committee, is now calling for abusive patients to be refused treatment and blacklisted.

He said: "There is no excuse for attacking staff unless a patient is mentally ill. It shouldn't be tolerated."

November has been declared Security Awareness Month, during which time bosses at the Royal Bolton Hospital will be hoping to highlight the problem.

As Christmas approaches, extra police patrols will also be drafted in at the hospital to prevent a further rise in attacks.

Lorraine Jones, the hospital's security management specialist, said: "Sometimes NHS staff become so used to being the victim of abuse, threatening behaviour or violence that they forget it's not actually part of their job and they shouldn't be expected to tolerate it."

Despite the shocking levels of violence recorded at the hospital, the actual number of attacks fell by six, compared with the previous 12 months.

However, the number of attacks on Primary Care Trust staff working in the community rose by 21 over the same period.

One hospital nurse, who asked not to be named, was so badly assaulted she has been given a reserved car parking space and is escorted to her car if she feels afraid. The patient who assaulted her was given a three year prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, earlier this year.

Between November, 2006, and February, this year, the hospital took part in a pilot scheme, which saw police officers drafted in to issue £80 on-the-spot fines to violent patients in the accident and emergency department. Seven people were referred to the police during the scheme and two fines were handed out.

Since then, doctors, nurses and other medical staff have been passing on contact details of abusive patients to police, who are still issuing fines. Permanent security staff are also employed at the hospital, CCTV is in operation and almost 2,000 hospital staff have been given conflict training.

Damian Isherwood, Unison spokesman, said: "Understandably a visit to the hospital can be a highly emotional time for many people, but this does not give them the right to be violent."

So they should ban them. There is no excuse for hitting out at the Nurses and Doctors. It might teach some people manners

Deliberately burn your Council House down they will rehouse you in possibly a newer fully decorated Home, abuse your Neighbours for Years get kicked out of your Home you are rehoused, attack Hospital staff get off scot free, if you ban them from this Hospital next time they get injured in a fight does the Ambulance picking them up have to take them to Hope Hospital instead of Bolton Hospital ? it's Britain do what the hell you want when you want, and if you want to be rewarded you better behave badly.

Spot on.

No one takes any responsibility for their own actions, and who can blame them. When was the last time we saw a politician or business chief really take the rap for a **** up?
It's no excuse for people lower down to behave badly, but those at the top should be leading by example.

Maybe if they didn't have to deal with violent patients the waiting time wouldnt be as high and they wouldnt be as stressed.

"Treated like sh1t" no doubt means having to wait your turn without smoking or drinking and understanding that people who are close to death will get treated before your ingrowing toe nail that hurts a bit.

Why are they calling for something that already exists? There is already a Violent Patient Scheme, where those registered have to get permission to see medics rather than just being able to turn up, so that the medics can arrange for suitable protection.

I think you'll find that this scheme applies to PRIMARY care, not secondary care providers. How could you utilise this scheme where patients "turn up " ad hoc, as in A/E departments? It only works in primary care because all patients have to make an appointment!!!! Do you suggest people make an appointment to turn up in A/E? Fab, my job gets sooooo much easier lol.
I see violent, aggressive and abusive patients regularly in our department, it's no use having private security guards because they are not permitted to intervene or restrain anyone legally (not that they wouldn't if a member of staff were getting battered!!!) so we just have to grin and bear it. Oh, how I'd LOVE to give em a good slap back!!!!
Last week paramedics, nursing staff AND police were verbally abused and treatened with violence off a delightful scrote who had been removed from a stolen car he had crashed, thus taking up an hour of the time of two paramedic crews, a fire engine and two traffic cars. Leave the buggers in them and chuck a match in is my opinion. Some people do not deserve to be treated at the expense of the tax paying community, but then again, I'm supposed to be "none judgmental", extremely difficult in some circumstances.

Cllr Morgan is again right. I spent 5 hours in A&E a couple of months ago with my 7 year old daughter. We had to witness drunks, listen to foul mouths and see a nurse pushed nearly over by a yob. When we finally got treatment the nurse dealing with us said that it wasn't the first time that the yob who pushed the nurse had caused trouble in A&E. Ban the lot of them and give the doctors and nurses a medal.

so when patients are on heavy medication and are not in control of their actions what then call in the heavy crew this could be your loved one im not saying that staff shouldn't be protected just that not everyone knows what their doing

Can I just add, I work at the hospital on the mental health wards and the comment that was made about "There is no excuse for attacking staff unless a patient is mentally ill" is utter outrage in my eyes! I do not go to work to be assaulted whether they have a mental illness or not! We report every incident to the Police. Just because someone has a mental illness does NOT mean they have a right to assault anyone!

People with lack of self control have got a licence to behave badly. thats what seperates them from normal people. If you wanna work in the NHS you have to accept that fact and the violent patient is always right.
