Transport chiefs have blamed a lack of funds for the problems with Bolton's bus services.

Dozens of local people took their concerns to the area's bus operators at a public forum on Thursday.

Late buses and a lack of services in some areas at certain times were the main concerns of frustrated passengers.

But the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, which is responsible for providing services to areas of the region that are not commercially viable, is blaming a shortage of cash on its inability to ensure there are enough services in every district.

Michael Renshaw, the interim service delivery director for GMPTE, said: "82 per cent of all bus services in Greater Manchester are run on a commercial basis by operators such as Arriva and First and GMPTE have no say in when and where these buses run.

"We're committed to ensuring all areas have access to public transport and we have a limited budget to fund socially necessary services that operators would not otherwise run. But this budget is simply not enough to fill all the gaps we would like."

What the people of Bolton want is a 20p standard bus fare for all journeys. The buses would well used even at late times of the day. This would mean more security for late users and overall greater profits for the companies particularly as cheap standard fares like 20p would mean there would be no point in ticketing with all the costs that involves.

If failing to please customers is completely down to lack of funds, they need to seriously write up their business plan again.

I agree with John about the standard fare though I think 20p is a bit low.
I've just come back from Edinburgh where they have a standard £1 fare which seems very popular, perhaps something in between would work.

I went to Caen in France over 10 years ago, and they had a flat fare system there. Your bus ticket cost the equivalent of 50p, and was valid on any bus for two hours from the time of purchase, which meant that people could nip into town, do their shoping and go home again, all on the same ticket. Lots of people used the buses there, because the system worked so well.
