A WOMAN woke in terror to the sound of explosions after vandals pushed a huge firework through her letterbox.
The Roman candle-type firework was shoved through the door of the terrace house in Lumsden Street, Daubhill, as the woman slept.
She was woken by her smoke alarm and the explosions, and rang the fire service from her bedroom.
There was only minor damage to the door and a carpet in the hall, but a fire chief said the firework could have left the woman trapped in a blazing house. Watch commander Dave Pimblett said: "This woman was understandably terrified at hearing her smoke alarm going off and the sound of the firework.
"Fireworks burn at a very high temperature and this could have started a fatal fire had it set light to the carpet.
"With Bonfire Night not a long time away, it's crucial that people realise how dangerous fireworks can be.
"Putting one through the letterbox of a house is beyond belief."
Firefighters were called to the house at 10.10pm on Thursday and they forced open a door before making sure the fire was out.
There had been reports of youths letting off fireworks in an alley behind Lumsden Street earlier in the evening.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
