Fears regeneration funding may not reach borough

REGENERATION funding for East Lancashire could be heading towards Burnley instead of Blackburn, councillors fear.

Housing market renewal programmes for 2008-11 are currently being discussed with regeneration company Elevate - but opposition councillors fear that much-needed funding is destined for Burnley instead of Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Changing criteria for major initiatives are thought to be behind the situation - which Blackburn's ruling coalition and housing officials deny will happen.

Coun Kate Hollern, Labour leader, said: "There must be an opportunity for us to identify properties within Blackburn with Darwen that will meet these criteria.

"I think that in most wards of this borough there must be some housing which fits the bill.

"We need to keep the pressure up to secure adequate resources for our borough."

Coun Salim Lorgat, executive regeneration member, said: "We are pushing hard to get our share of funding."

Critics had claimed regeneration work had ground to a halt in the borough but progress was being made on every project being undertaken by the council, he added.

Andrew Lightfoot, the council's regeneration director, added: "There is a review of the criteria for 2008-11, and we have contributed to that and these will be finalised soon.

"There are some risks associated with that but we are working with Elevate to ensure Blackburn with Darwen gets a good share of the overall funding."

The storm has emerged amid criticism over a decision by the coalition to allow Burnley to take Blackburn with Darwen's seat on the North West Housing Forum and Regional Assembly.

Coun Mohammed Khan, the former Labour representative on the housing forum, had expressed concern that Burnley council leader Gordon Birtwistle would be representing Blackburn's and East Lancashire's interests.

Council leader Colin Rigby said he was sure Coun Birtwistle had plenty of experience of regeneration issues and would ensure that Blackburn with Darwen's views were fairly represented at a regional level.

An Elevate spokesman said final funding levels for the organisation's 2008-11 programme had still not been finalised with central government.

Blackburn/darwen council had a major cockup with the redearth area where they wasted so much money, they shouldnt get anything this time round until they get their act together.

Give it all to Accrington, heaven knows it needs it!

Stop lying Rigby you know you supported the Burnley nomination because you didn't want the Lib Dem nomination from your coalition partners Cllr Lorgat to have it! As a result Blackburn and Darwen will lose out - Resign now your coalition isn't working and you are incapable of leading

Ha ha poor Darwen set to lose its housing money which would have jazzed up the grotty St Peters area. Serves you right for electing a bunch of numpties to run the council. Less for you means more for us so I'll raise a glass to that. You could never have improved the look of your town anyway no matter how much cash you threw at it.

Thats the problem with coalitions, they are too busy keeping in with each other they take their eye off the ball. We now need to depend on a Burnely Liberal to secure funding for Blackburn and Darwen.
You should be ashamed of yourselves, we as a borough have been sold for youe ego's.

Talking of coalitions. We attended a planning meeting on Tuesday, what a farce the chair mis counted the vote when a Tory voted with Labour. If it had not been for Jim Smith our area would have been plagues with cars going up and down our private road. What a disappointment Derek Hardman was. I will never vote for him again. Brian Gordon was no better. I thought they were there to represent the voice of the people who voted for them, If we lived in Darwen I am sure it would be a different story

Surly! We should be represented by our own Council (Blackburn with Darwen)when we want too get REGENERATION funds or any other funds etc not by another Council. Also why did we give up our seat on the North West Housing Forum and Regional Assembly to Burnley, then they will speak for us too get our funding. I'm sorry but I didn't vote for another Council too speak for us. This will not be forgotten.

I know a lot of people voted for the For Darwen party because they did not think they got a fair deal from Blackburn. They wanted Blackburn to have less power over Darwen, but I don't think that they meant for more power over Darwen to be taken from Blackburn and given to Burnley. We'll have to wait and see whether Burnley gives us a better deal than Blackburn with Darwen.

I agree entirely with Alexander Gordon, I voted for For Darwen as they convinced me that Blackburn was getting more than Darwen. They promised to be the voice of Darwen. What do we get but a Liberal from Burnely. Are these people stupid or what ? Gordon Birtwistle will do the best for Burnely ( they vote for him) not blackburn with darwen. If Colin Rigby or his Housing Councillor is not up to the job why are they there. To add insult to injury I have just been informed I am getting a Burnely Claret bin.

Of course they will, they are serial moaners. I just hope they remember what this inefficient, backward looking and unstable Junta are doing when it comes to elections!
