New bins aimed at encouraging people to recycle their waste have been unveiled on the streets of Blackpool.

Eight of new mini-recycling bins (pictured right) have been dotted across the town to encourage people to recycle their waste and help improve the environment.

It comes as council bosses revealed 48, 523 tonnes of the town's waste had to be sent to landfill last year.

Council chiefs are hoping the new Node 360 bins will help reduce the amount sent to landfill.

Each new recycling units consist of four separate units locked to a central post enabling people to recycle paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and general waste at the same time.

The wheeled units are designed specifically to fit securely into any public street scene and collections will be made in the same way.

Councillor Peter Callow, leader of the council, said: "The node bins are a boost to local recycling and will hopefully encourage more residents to recycle, as well as helping us to protect the environment by reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill sites.

"As a nation we are facing the challenge to reduce waste going to landfill and increase recycling rates in order to meet the Government's 2010 landfill target.

"The node bins are just one more way of helping to ensure we all do our bit for the environment. "

Council bosses hope to install a further 60 bins at different sites across the resort.

Lets hope that the council actually replace more bins that the previous council removed! I would also like to remind the council that its no good just putting bins out they need to empty them before they start overflowing!!!!!
