BUDDING sailors took advantage of the sun and the wind as they made waves at the Jumbles Sailing Club open day.

The Turton group held a free taster session for families, who took times to enjoy the glorious weather and the scenery at the club's lake in Turton.

Small groups of about two to four people would take it in turns to head out on to the water together with instructors on one of the many vessels available during Saturday's event.

And those who had finished their sailing adventure or just came along with family and friends helped themselves to the refreshments in the clubhouse as they watched the action.

Nancy Stones, principal of the sailing school, said: "We could not have asked for a more perfect day.

"Many of the people out on the boats are members and some of them have been taking people out there who want to learn.

"We hold this event to get the club known and to get more members. There are a lot of people around, including in Bromley Cross, who do not even know the club is here.

"This is all about encouraging people to come and have a go in a boat. For people who can not do it then we have training courses for members so we can get them out on to the water. The response today has been amazing and we have taken more than 80 people out on to the water since we arrived here at the lake at about 8am."

As well as the usual sailing boats, the club also brought out its two-person Sailability vessel, which they used to teach disabled visitors.

Fiona Jack, commodore of the sailing club, said they had managed to get a number of people to join the club as members and many more who have expressed an interest.

She said: "What we do find from these open days is they go home and think about it before they then decide to join up.

"I have talked to some of the visitors and a lot of people think sailing is expensive but it is not."

The club is based at the Jumbles Reservoir off Horrobin Lane and is open every Sunday from 10.30am to 5pm. There are a number of training days as well, usually on Saturdays, and a junior club for children aged eight to 18, which meets on designated Fridays and Saturdays.
