WITH results falling in Stanley's favour at the weekend the Reds have built up a cushion at the top of League Two, but it's a safety net boss John Coleman would be happy to do without.

Stanley's title rivals Luton Town and Notts County could only draw with Newport County and Mansfield respectively on Saturday, leaving the door ajar for Stanley and their 3-1 win over Forest Green Rovers extended the advantage at the top.

Coleman's side are now three points clear of the Hatters with a game in hand and they have an eight point cushion in the automatic promotion places. But Coleman wants to see his keep their foot on the gas rather than risk using that cushion they have built up.

"I don’t really want a cushion, I don’t want a safety net, because I don’t want us to fall over," the Stanley boss said.

"I just want to keep ploughing forward, I think that’s the best way and I think the players are buying into that as well.

"They can see the finishing line and they want to work hard to try and get over that finishing line."

Stanley have now put themselves in pole position for the League Two title as well as promotion.

The latter is the prize Coleman is ultimately focusing on, but he believes getting that secured as quickly as possible could also benefit the Reds attempts to land the silverware.

"If you keep focusing on the title that will give you a good chance of being automatically promoted," he said.

"The big prize is promotion. If we can get that done then it will take the pressure off us and gives us a good shot at taking the title, but all we want to do is finish in the top three."

The good feeling around the club is certainly growing, with Stanley pulling in their second highest crowd of the season at the Wham Stadium for Saturday's win over Rovers.

A total of 2,313 fans braved freezing temperatures to watch the Reds rack up an eighth straight home win and Coleman was full of praise for those that made it.

"You’ve got to give them every credit. They came out when it was freezing, they paid their hard earned money and the atmosphere they created was very, very good," he said.

"Hopefully it will only get better between now and the end of the season."
