An opera-singing former policeman from Eltham has been immortalised with a memorial at the football ground he used to sing.

PC Alex Morgan was a Met officer for 33 years and had received commendations for bravery during his time.

He was well known as an Arsenal fan as well as a talented opera singer and would sing at Highbury and various other charity concerts over the years.

He died aged 88 in June last year after having lived in Eltham for over 70 years, and a plaque bearing his name was erected at the exact spot that he used to sing at the site of the old Highbury stadium.

Bernadette Morgan is one of his six children and she was there last Sunday (March 11) at the unveiling of the plaque.

She said: “We placed a wreath and played our father singing O Solo Mio, which was the song he sang at the last game at Highbury against Wigan.

“He spent his time on the beat at Shooters Hill, Lee and Catford stations and was an old school bobby who believed in a clip round the ear and a promise not to do it again was the way to deal with minor offences.

“He was a well-respected member of the community raising hundreds of pounds over the years with his wife and family hosting and performing in charity concerts. Both he and his wife were professionally trained opera singers and often performed together.

“He was known as a wise man with strong morals - never ever swore in his whole life - and family loyalty and a voice like no other. The void felt by the family runs deep but the family stays strong and united because of him.”
