A PRIMARY school has been recognised nationally for wowing its pupils when it comes to learning.

Kearsley West Primary has been placed in the top two per cent of schools in the country for the progress children make during their time there.

The school believes its outstanding results are due to its 'rich and varied' curriculum which continues to 'wow' children.

Kearsley West Primary received a letter from the Minister for Education, Nick Gibbs congratulating the school for its 'impressive results'.

Headteacher Lesley Cooper said that the school has high expectations of all its pupils to ensure they fulfil their potential and become 'enthusiastic and independent learners'. She added that the school was very proud of being in the top two per cent of schools.

As part of children's learning, the school holds a 'wow week', concentrating on one topic, to allow children to immerse themselves in the subject.

Recently the school focused on Sikhism for their week.

The school invited external speakers and members of the community and staged workshops run by professionals to teach children about the religion.

The event span across the curriculum, with children writing about what they had learned and also took part in special cooking lessons, Indian dance, and created their own artwork based on the 5Ks of Sikhism, all of which said teachers 'enthused the children and motivated their learning and understanding'.

Mrs Cooper said: "Tolerance and respect are British values which we teach as part of the National Curriculum.

"Here, at Kearsley West, we want to make our learning as real as possible so we invited visitors to bring the Sikh culture into school.

"The pupils have had experience of making Sikh jewellery, designing and creating models of Gurdwaras, creating a healthy Indian food plate and much more.

"They have said that they love our wow weeks because the learning is exciting and we have a lot of visitors in school.

"This time they especially enjoyed recreating the Hola Mohallah festival, where the children were able to cover staff members with coloured powder as a means of celebrating this festival of colour."

Previous wow weeks have focused on farming, history and Spanish.
