JOBS are at risk after two major stores announced they have entered administration

Toys R Us and Maplin, who both have stores in Blackburn, have both failed at last-ditch attempts to save business putting 5,500 jobs across the country at risk.

Toys R Us have a store in The Mall Blackburn and Maplin on the Grimshaw retail park.

Maplin has 200 stores and 2,500 staff in the UK, while Toys R Us employs about 3,000 workers in its 105 stores.

Simon Thomas, Moorfields partner and joint administrator for Toys R Us, said: "Whilst this process is likely to affect many Toys R Us staff, whether some or all of the stores will close remains to be decided.

"We have informed employees about the process this morning and will continue to keep them updated on developments.

"We are grateful for the commitment and hard work of employees as the business continues to trade."

What customers need to know about Toys R Us collapse

The firm have been known to be grappling with a £15million tax bill as well as owing money to lenders.

A worse-than-expected trading period over the crucial Christmas period also put further strain on the company.

Mr Thomas said: "We will be conducting an orderly wind-down of the store portfolio over the coming weeks.

"All stores remain open until further notice and stock will be subject to clearance and special promotions. We're encouraging customers to redeem their gift cards and vouchers as soon as possible.

"We will make every effort to secure a buyer for all or part of the business."

It has been confirmed that gift cards and vouchers will be honoured while the stores continue to trade, but customers are being encourage to redeem vouchers as soon as possible as stores may close without notice.
