POORLY performing takeaways should be forced to display their food hygiene ratings.

That's according to town hall bosses who believe the move would encourage unhygienic fast food outlets to clean up their act.

The call comes as the Lancashire Telegraph publishes the latest round of inspections which shows the number of establishments with zero or one ratings in the area has risen by more than 50 per cent over the last six months.

There are currently 73 outlets with a low rating – compared to 41 in September 2017.

Every establishment, from high street restaurants to corner shops, is given a score between zero (worst rating) and five (best rating) based on potential risk to public health.

But owners do not have to display their score meaning those with the worst ratings can often escape negative publicity.

But the latest ratings displayed on the Food Standards Agency website have sparked renewed calls for mandatory displays.

They show that five food outlets in East Lancashire have been given food hygiene ratings of zero, the worst score which can be given.

The outlets with zero ratings are Cod Father in Burnley, Khan Foods and Mace Convenience Store in Accrington, D J Fairburn in Brierfield and China Express in Nelson.

A spokesman for Khan Foods, one of the food outlets which received a zero rating, said: “We’re due to have a re-inspection next week and we’re confident we’ve addressed the issues that have been raised.”

The other four outlets were unavailable for comment.

Cllr Jim Smith, Blackburn with Darwen Council environment boss, said: “We do our best to encourage food outlets to make sure they get the highest rating possible, as it’s in their interests.

“I would support compulsory displaying of food hygiene ratings so consumers can make a choice about where they eat.”

Burnley Council leader Mark Townsend said it was unacceptable that there were food outlets with such low ratings and called for displaying ratings to be mandatory.

He said: “There is no excuse for this, in this day and age.

“As a council, we try to give good advice on how to improve and for food outlets to take it.

“We expect that advice to be taken and if it isn’t, then further steps will be taken.

“I would welcome and support and change in the law which makes it compulsory for premises to advertise their ratings.

“Currently, we have a situation where food outlets who have low ratings don’t have to display them, which I don’t think is right.”

Blackburn was the borough with the most food outlets below standard, with 30 outlets having ratings of one, followed by Hyndburn with 27 which includes two outlets with zero ratings.

Third was Burnley with seven outlets, one of which has a zero rating.

Pendle was fourth with four outlets, two of which have zero ratings.

Both Rossendale and Ribble Valley currently have three food outlets with food hygiene ratings of one.
