A MAN who threatened to burn his former partner’s possessions used a petrol can to pour liquid over her door and his own head.

At Bolton Crown Court 35-year-old Antony Burrough was jailed for 15 months.

Duncan Wilcock, prosecuting, told how Burrough’s 10 month relationship with Karen Brooks had been turbulent and after they separated she found a new partner.

On September 1 last year she was returning to her Breightmet home when she met Burrough in the street and he threatened to burn her possessions if she did not speak to him.

He banged on the wall of her home and held a knife to his own throat before running off.

The court heard he returned carrying a petrol can.

“He spilled the contents of the can onto the door and the remaining contents over his head and threatened to burn both the house and himself,” said Mr Wilcock.

Burrough ran off, but when police arrived they could not smell any petrol.

Burrough, of no fixed address, admitted making threats and also causing £700 worth of damage to Ms Brook’s door on October 6. He has previous convictions for violence.

Gillian Kennaugh, defending, said Burrough had been homeless and in a “desperate situation” when he committed the offences.
