AN ARSON attack on a car brought neighbours out of their homes as popping and banging was heard in the street.

A Skoda Bravia was deliberately set alight last night in Bury and a neighbour called the fire brigade to the scene in Redmere Drive.

The Bury crew was called at around 1am and were able to get the fire under control and put out in about 40 minutes.

Watch manager Steve Wilcock said this was the second car fire a crew from Bury had responded to in 24 hours, with another car having to be put out in Pimhole earlier in the day.

Mr Wilcock said: "We've had two car fires in 24 hours. It's quite unusual these days to get car fires and we don't get as many people stealing cars either."

The Skoda was 'well alight' said Mr Wilcock, when the crew arrived and neighbours had gathered outside because of the noise the fire was making.

He said: "It was a burn out. A few of the neighbours came out because it was popping and banging. There's lots of charged cylinders and tyres that can pop during a car fire."

The fire service has notified police about the incident.
