A JUNCTION has been described as a 'real blackspot' amid concerns of multiple collisions in recent months.

According to Cllr Graham Farrington, who sits on Blackrod Town Council, the traffic-light controlled junction at Manchester Road and the A6 Blackrod Bypass has been the scene of 'three or four' accidents a week.

He claims that people travelling towards Blackrod on the A6 from Westhoughton and turning left at the junction on to Manchester Road are carrying on through the green light but don't come to a stop by the lines afterwards.

This means that south-bound traffic on the A6 turning right at the junction at Manchester Road are at risk of colliding with those vehicles.

Cllr Farrington said: "When they are coming into Blackrod, they have to stop after the traffic lights even if they are green because there is traffic turning right.

"There are three or four accidents a week there because they are hurtling along the A6. There are some serious accidents happening.

"It is a real blackspot. Someone is going to get killed.

"People do not realise they have got to stop if there is a vehicle turning. We have gone to the council and they are going to have to do something."

He voiced the possibility of altering the timings of the lights or improving the visibility of the white lines, requiring traffic to give way to vehicles from the right, which he said had become 'faded'.

A council spokesman said: "A number of improvements have been carried out at this junction, and the number of accidents recorded by the police has fallen.

"We are always happy to discuss any concerns Blackrod Town Council members have and if there is anything that can be done to help.

"Maintenance of lines is carried out in a cyclical programme and they will be renewed when considered necessary."
