A SMOKE detector raised the alarm after a toaster caught fire this morning.

Firefighters were called to Salterton Drive in Bolton just before 11.30am.

Crew Manager Carl Gleaves said: "The smoke alarm alerted the occupants to the fire.

"Towels had been placed on the toaster and it had been taken into the back garden, which we do not advise.

"The fire could have been a lot worse but the smoke alarm alerted the occupants to the fire and the toaster was not placed under any cabinets, which could have led it to spreading to the rest of the kitchen. We cleared the property of smoke.

"People should always check their smoke alarms are working and in case of fire call us and leave the property, which the people had done in this case."

Why the toaster set alight is not yet known.
