A NEW Co-op food store in Wilpshire launched following an investment of £820,000 which has created 15 new jobs for local people.

The new store, on Whalley New Road, was officially declared open for business by children from Mellor Saint Mary Church of England Primary School, Councillor Jean Rigby, Mayoress of Blackburn and Darwen and deputy Mayoress, Councillor Pat McFall.

Wilpshire’s Co-op, which has been constructed on the site of the former derelict pub, The Bull’s Head, has retained a number of original features including the original bull’s head casting which sits above the door.

It features an in-store bakery, hot food and self-service tills and has a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.

Neil Seedall, Co-op store manager said: “The Co-op is committed to transforming and growing its convenience business and we are delighted to be making such a significant investment in Wilpshire – the new store looks great and it really is an exciting time for the whole team.”

Rachel Hall, Co-op area manager, added: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum. The return to our ‘clover leaf’ design logo – first used in the 1960’s – aims to re-establish the Co-op as a centre for the community, and we want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op. We are also giving back to the community. Our members have an opportunity to make a difference locally simply by using their membership card when they shop with us and raise much needed funding for organisations who contribute to improving local life.”
