TWO hundred tubes of dangerous fake Sensodyne toothpaste have been seized in Blackburn and Darwen following a national alert.

The seizures were revealed as a pensioner spoke of his weeks of agony after developing gum problems whilst using the product.

The fake toothpaste is contaminated with a chemical used in anti-freeze, and 200 tubes of the 50ml tubes of Sensodyne Original and Sensodyne Mint have been seized in the Blackburn and Darwen area by trading standards officers.

They have also uncovered a third fake brand; Sensodyne fluoride, which is now being checked for possible contamination.

Details have been passed to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) which prompted the national alert last week and will check the ingredients.

The pensioner, aged 73 from Lower Darwen, has asked not to be named but said that he bought the tube of fake Sensodyne Original six weeks ago from a car-boot sale in Blackburn and developed a bad gum infection shortly afterwards.

He said: "The pain was horrendous. My gums were bleeding and pussing and it got so bad that I couldn't even touch my gums with my tongue.

"I'm not a well man as it is, but just imagine if I'd have had kidney problems; the situation could have been much worse."

His wife said: "My husband doesn't usually buy anything and thought he'd got a real bargain, but I was suspicious.

"Luckily I only used it once or twice and haven't had any problems."

The man sought treatment from his dentist but the problems did not subside until he stopped using the toothpaste after reading an article about it in the Lancashire Telegraph.

The fakes toothpaste is labelled in Arabic and English, whereas genuine Sensodyne is only labelled in English and the mint toothpaste is green, while the genuine article is white.

Tests have revealed this batch of toothpaste contains toxic levels of diethylene glycol which is used in anti-freeze.

It could harm young children or people with impaired liver or kidney functions.

The fakes have been sold through low-cost, bargain retail outlets and car boot sales.

The affected batch code is PROD 07 2005/EXP 08/2008.

The MHRA which issued the warning is continuing to investigate the source of the fake toothpaste.

Blackburn with Darwen Council said only two people have contacted it to say they has bought the fake toothpaste but they did not report any health problems.

Steve Brimble, lead officer for safety at Lancashire County Council said: "At the moment we are concentrating on making sure these products are not on sale, and telling people who may have bought it not to use it.

"It's important to make sure that this message is getting through."

Why on earth would anyone want to make fake toothpaste? If you've got the resources to make it then you would be better off making something thats a bit more expensive?

Well, maybe someone wanted to harm or even kill the people who used it?

There are truly sadistic, warped individuals out there for example.

Same as those who put glass into food at supermarkets. No difference.

Don't be silly, if these people are stupid enough to buy toothpaste from a car boot sale they deserve everything they get! If you can't afford decent toothpaste don't buy copies of one, buy own brand, it's probably just as good if you can't afford the proper one.

In response to 'Buttercup' I do not think the gentleman concerned actually thought he was buying 'fake' toothpaste just getting the real stuff at a cheaper price - who actually would think they were fake? its not as though you would think there was a lot of profit in fake toothpaste - these were probably mady by the psycho idiots that want to inflict harm on others and this is there way of doing it - In response to 'Immigrant' it seems that only you are pointing the finger of suspision at the Arabic people and hoping to stir up trouble between all other nationalities and the Aribic people, why not post your real name and email address and converse with them direct instead of voicing your racist views against the Arabic people on here

In response to 'GT' : My original comment was sarcastic. That is what I read in all the comments in LET. As soon as a news about minority comes up... so many comments appear suggesting that minorities should take the next flight back. I am a minority feeling bad reading those comments. Hence my sarcastic comment.

Obviously your 'sarcastic' comments are not helpful in this or any other situation as many people of all backgrounds are fed up with certain individuals that play the 'race card' at the drop of a hat, many like me will have thought you were doing that here. If you want the 'race hate' comments to stop dont belittle yourself to silly comments and put forward genuine arguments instead of mudslinging in the hope of evoking an argument about race.

I can understand the man buying Sensodyne cut price toothpaste because, after all, Sensodyne toothpaste is just too expensive in places like Boots chemist. And everyone, wherever they are in the world, likes a bargain don't they?

Did you know that these fake toothpastes, which originate in China and have not been manufactured by terrorists are also being sold in the equivalent of 'Pound Shops' in Saudi Arabia? And did you know that not all Saudis are rich? They shop in 'Pound shops' only they are called '10 Riyal Stores' in Saudi. So even Arabic people are wary about buying Sensodyne toothpaste from cut price stores.

Please disregard previous message and read this one as, in the previous message, I omitted the word 'Arab' before 'terrorists'.

I saw these tubes in the poundshop next to the Blackburn Shopping Centre in Blackburn and alerted trading standards and they removed them.

Yes, folks! For that 'extra tingly feel, brand spanking white teeth sensation' use the amazing new toothpaste 'diethylene glycol' ...

Yes, we at 'ingenious inventions for tomorrow' have come up with this little miracle ... Help fight plaque the natural way. Just don't rub your gums afterwards.

One more thing, turn off the lights for that 'glow in the dark feeling'.

See ya!
