AN allotment celebrated summer with an August open day.

Sapling Road Allotment, in Morris Green, welcomed people to admire plots which holders have worked hard to develop.

There were also fun activities, stalls and food and drink.

Secretary, Carol Barlow, said: “It has been a brilliant day and we’ve been very lucky with the weather.

“The first thing I did when I woke up this morning was check the forecast on my phone, but it’s been lovely and everyone has enjoyed it.

“There has been a veg stall, home-made ice cream, a craft stall, and fun and games for the kids.

“The barbecue also went down really well.

“We are really trying to encourage the young ones to get involved, because they are the future – if they are not interested then it will just die.

“Allotments can really offer a lot of peace and quiet from busy life.”

Mrs Barlow said when she worked at Bolton Hospice she used to regularly come to her allotments after finishing a shift.

She said: “I would come here and you could hear the cows and it was just so peaceful, you forget all the other worries that are out there.”

The allotments are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.

There are around 60 plots at Sapling Road and there has always been a waiting list of people who want to grab their own spot.

Cllr Shafaqat Shaikh said: “Events like this are really positive for the community, it is a good way of bringing people together.

“Everybody helps each other out and there is a real community spirit.”

Joanne Hill, one of the stall holders, was there with her seven-year-old daughter, Eve.

Ms Hill said: “It is great for children. She loves it in spring time when we are planting seeds and watching things grow.”
