These fantastic aerial pictures were taken in 1994 and highlight many of the changes that have taken place across the town over the past 23 years.

One lost spectacle is Burnden Park – Bolton Wanderers’ famous old ground in Manchester Road, which saw many of the Whites’ most famous moments.

Here, the stadium is pictured three years before Wanderers moved to the Reebok stadium in Middlebrook.

Clearly visible on the left is the Normid superstore, which used to protrude into the ground’s North West quadrant.

One of the areas that’s relatively unchanged is Churchgate, where listed buildings like the Old Man and Scythe – dating from 1251 and one of the country’s oldest pubs – lead toward the majestic parish church of St Peter’s.

Another interesting picture shows Crompton Way shortly before work began on the Valley shopping complex, where Cineworld is now located.

The orange building to the right of centre is the former B&Q store, now The Range home furnishings. To the right of this can be seen St Paul’s church and nearer the camera is Asda.

One image which illustrates how things have changed in the town centre shows the railway station and Newport Street area.

The area is now undergoing great changes including the interchange development and ongoing works to spruce up shop frontages.
