CYCLING star Jason Kenny cut the ribbon to open Bolton’s newest Aldi store.

The Farnworth-born Olympian was the guest of honour yesterday at the new supermarket at the Logistics North site at Cutacre, which is also home to Aldi’s massive state-of-the-art distribution centre.

Jason, who presented the first 30 customers in the queue with a free bag of fruit and veg, is a big fan of the discount chain.

He said: “I do like to do my shopping at Aldi, Laura and I go to our local store in Knutsford.

“I definitely enjoy having a wander up and down the special buy aisle to see what good offers I can find.

“It’s nice to come out on days like this to meet people and see how a place like this works.

“It is fantastic to see how many people turn up and are really excited to be the first through the door.

“It’s also really good that I can help promote healthy eating — people need to know that you can get healthy food that also tastes really good, but sometimes you have to know where to look for it.”

The 29-year-old is currently taking a break from cycling while he considers his future in the sport, while his wife and fellow cyclist Laura is pregnant with their first child.

Jason, a six-time Olympic gold medallist, added: “I am taking my time before I decide anything. We are expecting the little one to arrive soon, so I will wait until after the baby is born. It is a really exciting time for Laura and I, though I think she is probably a bit tired of being pregnant.”

The new store is the fourth Aldi in Bolton and company bosses say it will provide a major boost for nearby residents.

Steven Fox, store manager, said: “We are very excited about our new store. It is right next to our main office, so it is a big privilege for me to be here.

“We have spoken to a lot of customers from around the Westhoughton area who are happy that they will have a store close to them, rather than having to go into Bolton town centre.

“As you see more and more businesses moving into Logistics North, it is also going to be good for the people who work here. This whole area has been transformed from what used to be just unused space into a real destination.”
