Hate crime in Greater Manchester has doubled since Monday's terrorist attack.

Ian Hopkins, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, revealed that incidents had risen from 28 on Monday to 56 on Wednesday.

During the press briefing he said that, while police could not directly link it to Monday's attack at Manchester Arena, the situation would be monitored.

He said: "I've sent personal messages to places of worship across Greater Manchester and thanked them for their support.

"We will not tolerate hate crime here in Greater Manchester."

Mr Hopkins encouraged people to report any incidents of hate crime.

Eight individuals are currently in custody following raids across Greater Manchester, all aged between 18 and 38.

There are 12 locations being searched and the cordon remains in place at Manchester Arena.

Mr Hopkins said there would be increased security at upcoming events including the Great Manchester Run and armed officers would be on the streets.

He added: "Through these difficult times we have seen the best of people in Manchester.

"They have come together to support each other since the horrific events of Monday evening.

"I've been inspired by their determination compassion and solidarity that are characteristic of our diverse city."
