TRANSPORT bosses have said they don’t know when trains, buses and roads will be back to normal following the terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena.

Transport for Greater Manchester has advised that all modes of transport across Greater Manchester will remain affected during the evening rush-hour tonight and into this evening at least.

Tram and rail services are not currently able to run through Victoria Station and bus services are also affected – a detailed list of diverted services is on the TfGM website.

Passengers should be prepared for disruption and allow extra time for their journeys.

There are also a number of emergency road closures and non-signposted diversions in place, which means congestion and long delays are likely.

Where possible drivers are encouraged to use the M60 motorway, which is running freely at the present time.

Peak time travel is expected to be very busy this evening and travellers are encouraged to leave earlier or later to avoid rush hour.

TfGM has created a special travel information page on its website to help keep people in Greater Manchester moving: www.tfgm.com/travel-information-23-may

Anyone wishing to attend the vigil at Albert Square at 6pm is advised to travel in good time, using public transport services or park and ride facilities.

More details are available on the travel information page. A spokesman for TfGM said due to the ongoing and changing nature of the incident, the organisation could not predict how transport would be affected tomorrow morning.

The spokesman added travellers should keep checking TfGM's website and social media feeds for updates.

Jon Lamonte, chief executive of TfGM, said: “The thoughts of everyone at Transport for Greater Manchester are with all those affected by this horrific event.

“People should not be afraid to travel, however we would ask people to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious or concerns to the police, keep their belongings with them at all times and ensure items are not left behind when leaving buses, trams or trains.

“Working together with our partners, including the emergency services, operators and local authorities, we are determined to keep Greater Manchester moving during this time.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and I'd strongly advise anyone looking to travel in and around Greater Manchester to continue to check the TfGM, Metrolink websites and Twitter feeds."

Monday night's terror attack on the Ariana Grande concert caused traffic chaos in Manchester city centre and the wider Greater Manchester region on Tuesday.

There were reports of delays after delays at Bolton Train Station, causing a backlog of stranded passengers on the platform.

In the city centre, many roads into Manchester were cordoned off by police dealing with the incident, in which 22 victims died.

Traffic was brought to a standstill around much of the city centre in the morning's rush hour traffic.
