A search through our archive turned up some interesting pictures of this area, as well as some intriguing stories.

A well-known landmark in the area, Doffcocker Lodge, featured in several.

A great freeze hit the region in 1978. Despite the dangers and warnings from the police, some people took the opportunity to walk upon the ice sheet at Doffcocker Lodge.

The lodge eventually became a conservation site and nature reserve after damning works were undertaken to stop the wetland draining.

The island on Doffcocker Lodge was a victim of its own success in 1992. So attractive was it to visiting birds that the nature reserve’s fringes had become eroded by all those tiny feet. Volunteers helped plant marginal species to stabilise the soil and prevent further damage.

A heartfelt plea from a mystery lover had motorists baffled in 1990. The sign scrawled in red spray paint and placed at the Doffcocker roundabout, read ‘Karen. Take me back’.

No focus on Doffcocker would be complete without a look at the famous Doffcocker Inn. This fine structure is said to be a ‘calendar pub’: Designed with numerical precision to reflect a year - 365 panes of glass (days) 52 doors (weeks) four floors (seasons) and 12 rooms in the cellar (months).
