WE asked for memories of what we thought was Bolton’s shortest street and got memories of a 'short street'.

That is because Brenda Brooks lived in Short Street, Farnworth, 70 years ago.

“On my side there were about five houses. I lived at number three with my mum and dad Ellen and Joe Chick.

“A family called Worden lived at number five and a family called Fay lived at number seven.

“There was a top shop adjoined to our row but their address was Trentham street. On the other side, number two, there was a big family called Seddons.”

She can recall bitterly cold days when the snow came up to the window sill and having to go out into the yard to use the toilet.

Brenda and her pals played in the street until dark.

She recalls the “getter upper” coming with his long cane and tapping on the window if the family wanted an early call.

“The black pea cart used to come regularly and the rag and bone man used to come up the back street.

“We had great bonfires where the mums used to gather and sit on the settees which were later burned .

“But the best day was the day after when the embers were burning.

“We could put spuds in which left your mouth all black,” she says.

There will be more of Brenda’s memories in next week’s Looking Back.
