FIREFIGHTERS rescued a dog that had fallen eight feet into an inspection pit of a sewer.

The Staffordshire Terrier was not hurt in the incident which happened at around 10.30pm on Friday.

It is thought the inspection pit cover had been removed while work was being carried out behind a house in Oban Drive, Blackburn.

A firefighter was sent down the pit to rescue the dog which was okay but 'very dirty' according to a fire spokesman.

He said: "We sent a firefighter down. It was a tight squeeze but we managed to get the dog out.

"It went straight into the bath."
