A DEAL has been signed which will see Burnley FC in the Community take over an outdoor education centre.

Question marks remained over the future of the Whitehough site at Barley, as Lancashire County Council looked to sell off assets.

The charity has now secured a 125-year lease for the Barley New Road complex.

Under the contract, it has pledged to invest £50,000 to upgrade the centre, which has 80 beds, education rooms and camping, alongside a conference suite.

The organisation is also set to open a new leisure centre, with a 3G pitch and education rooms, at the former Brierfield Mills complex in October.

Neil Hart, the outfit’s chief executive, said: “I’m delighted that as a charity we have been able to agree this asset transfer with Lancashire County Council and that Whitehough will continue to operate for the benefit of young people and for schools in our community.”

County Cllr Jennifer Mein, council leader, said: “Their application, based on offering great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors to some of the county’s most disadvantaged young people, fulfilled the terms of our asset transfer policy.

“It ensures Whitehough will keep serving the Lancashire community for years to come.”

County Cllr Azhar Ali, health and wellbeing cabinet member, who represents Nelson South division, said: “The memorable experiences which children receive at Whitehough not only have an immediate impact on shaping their confidence and life-skills but, by introducing them to outdoor activities, can go on to have a positive impact on their health throughout their lives.”
