A DESIGNER has created a new anorak for Adidas that has been worn by David Beckham and Liam Gallagher — and he has named it after Horwich.

Gary Aspden launched the Horwich Anorak this month as part of his Adidas Spezial range.

And it will not be the last time Horwich appears on the designer’s work, as the Horwich tracksuit is set to launch at midnight tonight.

Mr Aspden said: “Why not call them after Horwich? The north of England has always been an adidas heartland and is my biggest inspiration in what I do. I often acknowledge areas of northern towns in the names I use for Spezial products. I have a few old friends from Horwich and Bolton as I spent a lot of time over there as a youth — I was a Dance Factory regular.”

The anorak launched on Friday, March 17 and according to Mr Aspden it sold out in most UK stockists immediately.

It has been worn by celebrities including David Beckham and Liam Gallagher, and the pictures are posted on Mr Aspden’s Instagram account.

He said he has known both Liam and Noel for many years and sent one of the anoraks to Liam, who then sent him back a picture of him wearing the jacket.

Mr Aspden said: “When I sent Liam the Horwich anorak he came back to say how much he loved the coat and sent me a picture of him wearing it which I posted on my Instagram.

"I then, purely by coincidence, saw an image of David Beckham on Instagram wearing it a few days later which was great.

"One of my good pals who is from Horwich also loves and wears this coat and that means a lot. While it’s nice to see famous faces wearing it what we are doing with Spezial it also matters a lot to me that regular lads who appreciate good product like it.”

Other works that feature northern locations in the names include the Haslingden jacket and the Pleasington anorak.

The 47-year-old grew up in Darwen but spent a lot of his childhood in Horwich and has friends there. Mr Aspden studied at the University of Central Lancashire as a mature student at 25.

He began working with adidas when he was 29 on entertainment promotions, looking after relationships between the company and the entertainment industry.

Adidas currently retains the designer as a consultant and he has been designing the Spezial range for the last three years.
