PLANS have been unveiled to make day surgery procedures in East Lancashire more efficient.

Bosses at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust have been analysing the layout and operation of theatres at the Burnley General Teaching Hospital site.

And as a result of the study Mark Penny, the trust’s estate project supervisor, has submitted an application to Burnley Council for an extension to house a new service corridor.

Architects said that the a double-storey bay curtain window would need to be removed to create the single-storey addition, accompanied by a medical gas storage room.

This would link the day theatres, which provide services for patients across East Lancashire, with ward recovery areas, planners have been told, freeing up space elsewhere within the Casterton Avenue complex.

An existing path to the theatres’ entrance will be reconfigured as part of the proposed move, which it is said will lead to a previously open courtyard being enclosed.
